Documentary Practice Week 13 – Expats

One of the most challenging things a person can do is drop everything they know and willingly throw themselves into an entirely new world, full of new people, places, words, experiences and challenges. Often times, it can seem like a dauntless, almost impossible challenge, with language, culture are prejudice all acting as barriers. Even today, these things are all ever present.

The world of the expat is one chock full of difficulty. Attempting to peer into this world can be an enlightening experience that reveals the most divided aspects of our society. I myself lived with a group of expats in Portugal, so I can to an extent understand the learning curve involved with that sort of life, and it is a subject that I have taken a great interest in.

I was inspired by seeing the work of expats both here in the UK as well as abroad, and the challenges that they must face. Its more than just the barrier of communication; learning the culture and values of the society that you move in to is incredibly difficult. I found a great respect for the people who tried their absolute hardest to communicate with me, and I understand that such a life is one that should command respect.

I want to explore these ideas in greater detail; observing the daily lives and responsibilities of Expats living in their new homes. Why did they leave, and why do they wish to stay? What do they think of their new homes? These are the questions that I will explore. Such ideas will provide ample opportunity for stories and exploring the lives and circumstances of individuals in their ever changing lives.
